TOMS RIVER, NJ — A juvenile suspect has been charged in connection with the shooting that left a 17-year-old injured inside the Ocean County Mall on Wednesday night, authorities confirmed.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced Friday that the suspect is facing charges of Attempted Murder, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
The charges stem from the March 25 shooting that unfolded around 8:10 p.m. inside the mall on Hooper Avenue.
What Happened
According to investigators, the victim was seated in a common area when an individual approached and attempted to start an altercation.
Authorities say the suspect began to walk away before turning back and firing multiple gunshots. One of the shots struck the victim in the face.
The suspect then fled the scene.
Responding officers from the Toms River Township Police Department located the injured teen and rushed him to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. He remains in stable condition.
Arrest and Charges
Following a joint investigation involving the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Toms River Police, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, authorities identified a juvenile suspect.
That individual has since been taken into custody and is currently being held at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.
Because the suspect is a minor, New Jersey law limits what information can be released. Officials have not disclosed the suspect’s name, age, or additional identifying details.
Official Response
“This was a senseless act of violence that has no place in our civilized society,” Prosecutor Billhimer said in a statement. “This behavior will not be tolerated here in Ocean County.”
He also credited investigators for acting quickly to identify and apprehend the suspect.
