Teen Shot in Face at Ocean County Mall as Police Hunt Suspect

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A 17-year-old was shot in the face inside the Ocean County Mall Wednesday night in what prosecutors are calling a targeted act of violence that has shaken the local community.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, the shooting occurred on March 25, 2026, at approximately 8:10 p.m., when officers from the Toms River Township Police Department responded to reports of a gunshot victim inside the mall on Hooper Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found the teenage victim suffering from a single gunshot wound to the face.

He was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he is currently listed in stable condition.

What Happened Inside the Mall

Investigators say the teen had been sitting in a common area of the mall when another individual approached him and attempted to initiate a confrontation.

That interaction escalated quickly.

Authorities say the suspect began to walk away—but then turned back and fired multiple shots in the victim’s direction. One of those shots struck the teen in the face.

The suspect then fled the scene in what is believed to be a gray sedan.

“Targeted Shooting,” Officials Say

“This appears to be a targeted shooting, and there is no known danger to the public at this time,” Prosecutor Billhimer said in a statement.

The case is currently being investigated by:

  • Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit
  • Toms River Township Police Department
  • Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Community Impact: Public Spaces No Longer Feel Safe

A shooting inside a mall is the kind of violence that hits differently.

More Stories from QueerDispatch

These are supposed to be safe, everyday spaces—places where teens hang out, families shop, and people pass time without thinking twice about their safety.

When that illusion breaks, it leaves a lingering unease that doesn’t disappear when the police tape comes down.

And for many communities—including LGBTQ+ people—public safety already feels fragile.

Even when officials say there’s “no danger to the public,” incidents like this raise deeper questions:

  • Who is safe in public spaces?
  • What does “targeted” really mean—and for whom?
  • And how often do we only learn the full story after the headlines fade?

What We Don’t Know Yet

As of now, several critical details remain unclear:

  • The identity of the suspect
  • The motive behind the shooting
  • Whether the victim and suspect knew each other
  • Any potential bias or targeted context beyond a personal dispute

Those answers will shape how this story evolves—and how the community responds.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities emphasize that the investigation is active and ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Sergeant Denis Mitchell at 732-929-2027, extension 2746.

Final Thought

There’s a difference between being told you’re safe—and actually feeling safe.

For a teenager sitting in a mall, that difference came down to seconds.

And for everyone else, it’s a reminder of how quickly normal can become something else entirely.
