Independent journalism doesn’t run on corporate budgets. It runs on people.
Right now QueerDispatch is largely a one-person newsroom. Stories are researched, written, edited, illustrated, formatted, and published by a single person who believes that LGBTQ+ communities deserve a newsroom that reports on the issues affecting us — without watering them down for corporate advertisers or political comfort.
But the truth is simple:
One person can only do so much.
And that’s where you come in.
QueerDispatch is growing. More readers are discovering the site every week, and more stories need to be investigated, verified, and published. To keep that momentum going, we’re opening the door for community contributors.
More Stories from QueerDispatch
This isn’t about building a traditional newsroom hierarchy.
It’s about building a community newsroom.
What We’re Looking For
You do not need to be a professional journalist to contribute. Some of the best reporting comes from people who are closest to the story.
There are many ways you can help.
Fact Finders & Researchers
Many stories begin with a tip, a rumor, or a document. Fact finders help track down:
- Public records
- Policy documents
- Local news coverage
- Statements from officials
- Data that supports or contradicts a claim
If you like digging for information and verifying sources, this role is incredibly valuable.
Community Reporters
Are you seeing something happening in your state, your school board, your workplace, or your community that others should know about?
Community reporters help:
- document local events
- investigate policy changes
- report on protests or organizing efforts
- share firsthand experiences
- surface stories larger outlets ignore
Some of the most important stories start at the local level.
Preview Readers & Editors
Every newsroom needs people who can help look at a story before it goes live.
Preview readers help with:
- catching typos or unclear wording
- identifying missing context
- sanity-checking sources
- making sure an article flows well for readers
If you’re detail-oriented or simply love reading, this role is incredibly helpful.
WordPress Experience (Helpful but Not Required)
QueerDispatch runs on WordPress, one of the most widely used publishing platforms in the world.
You do not need experience with WordPress to contribute.
However, if you have previously:
- written posts in WordPress
- edited articles in WordPress
- worked with WordPress media libraries
- formatted articles or embedded links
that experience can be a big plus.
We can also help teach new contributors how the publishing workflow works.
What Makes QueerDispatch Different
QueerDispatch exists because too many stories affecting LGBTQ+ people are either:
- ignored
- sanitized
- buried in larger political coverage
This site focuses on reporting the stories that directly affect queer communities — especially the ones that don’t get attention elsewhere.
Our approach is:
- community-focused journalism
- clear activist perspective
- verified information and sources
- accessible reporting anyone can read
And most importantly:
We believe the community itself should help shape the newsroom.
What Contributors Gain
Contributing to QueerDispatch can give you:
- published bylines (if desired)
- journalism experience
- research and reporting skills
- involvement in community storytelling
- the opportunity to help shape independent LGBTQ+ media
You can also contribute anonymously or under a pseudonym if safety or privacy is a concern.
This Is a Community Project
QueerDispatch isn’t backed by a media corporation.
It’s built by people who believe:
Our communities deserve to document our own stories.
If you’ve ever read a story and thought:
“Someone should report on this.”
You might be exactly the person we’re looking for.
How to Get Involved
If you’re interested in helping, reach out with a short message about:
- what kind of role you’d like to help with
- any relevant experience (if you have it)
- topics or regions you’re interested in covering
You don’t need a résumé. You just need curiosity, care for the truth, and a willingness to help.
