Two Women. Two Timelines. One Name: Arrest in 1990 Murder Raises New Questions About Missing Wife

VERNON, NJ — For 36 years, the murder of Lisa McBride sat unanswered.

Now, police say they’ve finally made an arrest.

But that arrest isn’t just closing one case.

It’s forcing a second one back into the light.

Because the man charged with killing Lisa McBride is also the last person to see his wife alive—before she vanished in 2012.

A Cold Case Breaks Open

On April 10, 2026, Robert William McCaffrey Jr., 54, was taken into custody in North Carolina in connection with the 1990 killing of Lisa McBride in Vernon Township, New Jersey.

He now faces:

  • First-degree murder
  • First-degree kidnapping
  • Second-degree burglary

The arrest came after a coordinated, multi-state investigation involving New Jersey and North Carolina law enforcement agencies.

Lisa McBride, a resident of Highland Lakes, was murdered in June 1990.

For decades, there were no answers.

Now, there is finally a suspect in custody.

But This Isn’t the Only Case

More than twenty years after McBride’s murder—and fourteen years before his arrest—another woman in McCaffrey’s life disappeared.

More Stories from QueerDispatch

Marjorie “Gayle” McCaffrey, his wife, vanished on March 17, 2012, from their home in Charleston, South Carolina.

According to investigators:

  • McCaffrey told police the couple had argued that night
  • He claimed he left the home, then returned to find her gone
  • He said she left behind a farewell letter

That letter was later determined to be fabricated.

McCaffrey was convicted of obstructing justice for lying to investigators.

Gayle McCaffrey has never been found.

Authorities consider her case a suspected homicide.

A Pattern That Can’t Be Ignored

Two women.

Decades apart.

One confirmed homicide. One still officially unsolved.

And one man at the center of both.

This new arrest does not automatically solve Gayle McCaffrey’s disappearance. But it changes the context.

Because when someone previously tied to a missing person case is later charged with murder, investigators don’t just close the new case.

They look backward.

What Happens Now

McCaffrey is currently being held in Dare County, North Carolina, pending extradition to New Jersey.

As that case moves forward, attention is already shifting to South Carolina.

Cold cases don’t exist in isolation. They live in patterns, timelines, and missed connections.

And sometimes, it takes solving one to expose another.

For the Families, the Timeline Is Different

For Lisa McBride’s family, this moment may finally bring answers after 36 years.

For Gayle McCaffrey’s family, the waiting continues.

One case may be moving toward justice.

The other is still defined by absence.
